What is Professional Dangerousness?
Professional Dangerousness (PD)
Is a human services concept that names how the actions of professionals, even with good intent, can inadvertently amplify risk, inequity, or negative outcomes for the people and communities they serve.
Originally discussed within social services literature, the PD Collective is actively expanding the concept through research, practice, and cross-disciplinary dialogue.

The PD Collective is doing two things simultaneously and intentionally.
First, it is honoring the origin of professional dangerousness in child welfare research — Dale (1984), the Rochdale NSPCC team, Morrison, Ferguson, Weld, Reder et al. That literature is the scholarly foundation and needs to be acknowledged.
Second, it is actively expanding the concept so that every human services professional — not just child welfare workers — can recognize themselves and their work in it. The goal is that a nurse, a teacher, a substance use counselor, a housing worker, a mental health clinician, a legal advocate, a community organizer reads the PD Collective definition and thinks: that is about me and my work too.
